Hours after Suriya's Karuppu premiered on OTT platform Prime Video, a barrage of posts criticising the film's colour grading emerged on social media with many calling it "poor" and "dull".
The RJ Balaji directorial, which released in theatres on May 15, met with positive reviews and massive commercial success for its engaging storyline and screenplay. It has earned over Rs 340 crores till date and is continuing its successful run on the big screens in its fifth week, a massive feat for Suriya as well as the makers for Karuppu.
While a section of the audience had pointed out their issues on the film's "bluish" and "dull" colour during the theatrical run, the criticism has amplified following its OTT release. "OTT version is very bad, colour grading work is very poor," said one user while another said, "The Teaser grading was perfect.. GK Vishnu's frames were vera level.. Felt the grading could've done more justice to them." Some also defended the makers, saying it could have been done intentionally to showcase Karuppu aka Karuppasamy in his element. However, many urged the makers as well as Prime Video to rectify the issue as soon as possible.
In Karuppu, Suriya portrays the titular guardian deity who descends to Earth to help a distressed family when they call out for his help. However, he soon realises the rigged nature of the legal system which has been guarded by corrupt individuals for decades, and decides to reform them.
The cast of the film also includes Trisha, Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, Natty Natraj, among others. The filmmaker portrays the antagonist, Baby Kannan.
The technical team includes editor Kalaivanan, cinematographer GK Vishnu and composer Sai Abhyankkar.
