A film centred on a wedding night does not necessarily need a big star to create a buzz. In the case of Modha Rathiri, much of the attention around the film has come from its debutant team and the support it received from established names in Tamil cinema. The film also took a relatively unusual route by building its story around the chaos that unfolds during a single night.
The rural comedy drama follows an unusual wedding where a series of surprises and lies turn what should be the beginning of a new life into an increasingly chaotic night. Rishikanth essayed the lead in the film, while Anishma Anilkumar played the female lead. Raja Karuppasamy directed the film, which was backed by Mythri Movie Makers.
Now, Modha Rathiri is set to move from theatres to streaming. The film will premiere on Netflix on September 18, a few weeks after its theatrical release on August 21. It is expected to be available in multiple languages on the platform.
Apart from Rishikanth and Anishma, the cast includes Chetan, A Venkatesh, Bagavathi Perumal, Abdool Lee, Shelly Kishore, Sangeetha Balan, Banupriya and others. Surendran Paranjothi handled cinematography, Ashok Arjunan edited the film, and Bharath Sankar composed the music.
An excerpt from CE's review of the film reads, "Debutant Raja Karuppasamy shows strong signs of a filmmaker with control over his craft very early on. With the help of performances and neatly designed set-ups and pay-offs, he has managed to make a film with warmth, humour and chaos surrounding a wedding, while also recognising the concomitant social baggage."
The film's OTT arrival comes after it received public support from several names in the industry. Silambarasan had earlier highlighted the need for more support for smaller films, while RJ Balaji also extended his appreciation to the team. More recently, Dhanush described Modha Rathiri as a heartwarming film and praised the efforts of its first-time filmmakers, urging families to watch it.
