Suriya as Karuppusamy has been making a major splash at the box office and garnering positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. The RJ Balaji directorial, which also starred the filmmaker in the antagonist role, ended with a possibility for a sequel.
For the unversed, (spoilers ahead) Karuppu ends with Suriya as the titular deity killing Baby Kannan (RJ Balaji) and promising to come down to Earth whenever injustice takes the upper hand. In the Tamil Nadu parliament, while discussing the same, Chief Minister Usilampatti Karuppaiah Gandhi (UKG) aka RJ Balaji (in a homage to his role from the 2019 film LKG) asserts his dominance in the state assembly, urging his supporters to do whatever it takes to stay in power. Suriya once again appears as a form of Karuppu, this time as an MLA, smiling and hinting to audiences that he would come back either in Karuppu 2 or in a possible sequel to LKG.
Sharing details on the same, RJ Balaji confirmed that a sequel would be made for the film, but he and his team are not willing to rush into it immediately. "All three of us don't wish to jump into it right now. While we do have a core idea - God vs politics, we are not sure if this is the right time in the state to have a political film. We don't know about that. In our mind, we also have another line and the prospect of it is very exciting," he explained, adding that he doesn't want to jump from the first part to the second and then to third and so on.
"If that was the case, I would have done LKG 2 or Mookuthi Amman 2. I do not wish to follow the obvious pattern. It has to excite me first and then those who work with me. Just because it has the market and can be sold for a higher amount, I don't wish to indulge in it. But I would love to work with Suriya sir again and again as we had mutual respect, rapport and love for each other," he shared.
The cast of the film also includes Trisha, Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, Natty Natraj, among others. The filmmaker portrays the antagonist, Baby Kannan. The film had recently surpassed the Rs 300 crore milestone in collections worldwide.
