Some love stories begin with a grand gesture. Others take shape quietly, over repeated meetings and years of working together. For Suriya and Jyotika, it was the film sets that first brought them into each other's orbit, long before either actor would become one half of Tamil cinema's most closely followed couples.
Their story has an interesting distinction between where they met and where they fell in love. The first came in 1999, when the two worked together in Vasanth's Poovellam Kettuppar. Jyotika was still relatively new to Tamil cinema and, having grown up in Mumbai, was learning the language. Suriya has recalled being drawn to her sincerity and dedication to learning her lines. The two, however, did not immediately become a couple. Their friendship developed later, and eventually evolved into a relationship during another film.
Twenty years after they first tied the knot, Suriya and Jyotika recently renewed their wedding vows in an intimate ceremony surrounded by their children, family and friends. Sharing glimpses of the occasion, Jyotika called it “THE SEQUEL” and described it as a celebration of their 20 years of “love and war”.
The timing offers a reason to look back at the films that quietly charted their journey. After Poovellam Kettuppar, the actors reunited in Uyirile Kalanthathu and later Kaakha Kaakha. It was during the making of Gautham Vasudev Menon's 2003 cop thriller that their friendship reportedly turned into love. Interestingly, Jyotika had recommended Suriya's name to Gautham Menon after being impressed by his performance in Nandha.
Jyotika has previously spoken about what drew her to Suriya during those years. In an earlier interview, she said his respect towards her was a major reason she decided to marry him. She recalled that even during romantic scenes, he acted only as much as the director required and never took undue advantage of the situation. For her, that respect stood out.
Their screen partnership continued through Perazhagan and Maayavi, before culminating in Sillunu Oru Kaadhal in 2006. The latter now carries an especially curious place in their shared filmography. Suriya and Jyotika played a married couple in the film, which released just three days before they got married in real life on September 11, 2006.
By the time they reached their wedding, the pair had already spent several years working together and building a relationship away from the screen. Their path to marriage was not entirely straightforward either. Suriya's father, veteran actor Sivakumar, has recalled that he was initially opposed to the relationship before eventually accepting their decision. Suriya had reportedly made it clear to his family that he wanted to marry Jyotika.
Their professional association eventually extended beyond acting together. After their marriage, Jyotika took a break from acting while raising their children, Diya and Dev, and returned to cinema with 36 Vayadhinile in 2015. Suriya has publicly supported her career and the couple have since also worked together as producers through 2D Entertainment.
Their relationship has also remained intertwined with the way they speak about cinema and each other's careers. In August, ahead of their 20th anniversary, Suriya spoke about love at the Vishwanath & Sons audio launch, saying that love should continue even after marriage and that partners should keep respecting each other as their priorities and lives change.
Now, with a second set of vows, their story has come full circle in a rather cinematic way. They first met as co-stars in Poovellam Kettuppar, fell in love while working together years later, played husband and wife on screen in Sillunu Oru Kaadhal just days before becoming husband and wife in real life, and have now returned to the aisle two decades later. The sequel, fittingly, comes after a story that began on a film set.
