Rajinikanth's Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, wrapped up its first week collections with Rs 229.65 crore across India. A lion's share of its earnings came naturally from the Tamil audience who contributed to a whopping Rs 149.95 crore, while Hindi, Telugu and Kannada versions collected Rs 26.05 crore, Rs 51.6 crore and Rs 2.05 crore respectively. The film continues to face a steep drop after its first weekend of release and had earned just over Rs 5 crore on its ninth day.

Mounted on a talented star cast featuring Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Upendra and Aamir Khan, among others, the film had earned over Rs 150 crore across India in its opening weekend, a successful feat only few films could achieve. Upon release on August 14, the film, pitted against YRF's War 2, broke multiple records including becoming the highest grossing Tamil film on its opening day, beating Lokesh's own Leo, starring Vijay. However, the film had witnessed significant decrease in revenue following mixed to negative reviews from fans and critics.

Coolie’s collections dropped from double digits to single digits within five days, earning Rs 9.5 crore on day 6, Rs 7.5 crore on day 7, and Rs 6.15 crore on day 8. The film's total collection now stands a Rs 235.15 crore. If the trend continues, it might take a few more days than predicted for it to reach the Rs 250 crore milestone.

Backed by Sun Pictures, Coolie marks Lokesh Kanagaraj’s first collaboration with Rajinikanth.

An excerpt from Cinema Express’ review reads: “The reliable Anirudh is effective in most portions, giving the film the right amount of intrigue and massiness, and overcompensates for the contrivances in the narrative when all the cards are laid on the table. For a film that wants to rely more on the emotional journey of a loner coming to terms with loss and longing, Coolie takes too long a time to get there.”

The film has music composed by Anirudh, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan and editing by Philomin Raj.
