Despite mixed reactions from critics, the Coolie juggernaut rolls on at the box office. Sun Pictures, the production banner behind the Rajinikanth starrer, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, announced a while ago that the film grossed more than 404 crore over the first four days of its release. Thus, according to the producer, it now holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing Tamil film at the worldwide box office. In India alone, the film has minted 200 crore at the box office, with a net collection of around 5 crore on its fifth day, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.

Coolie tells the story of a man who sets out to avenge his friend's murder. The film reunites Rajinikanth and Sathyaraj after 1986's Mr Bharath. The star-studded ensemble cast includes Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Nagarjuna, Upendra, and Kanna Ravi, among others.

The film has received mostly negative reviews from critics across India. While critics generally have positive feedback for the performances, especially by Rajinikanth, Soubin, Shruti, Upendra, and Nagarjuna, they are not impressed by the storytelling. In our review of the film, Avinash Ramachandran wrote, "Rajinikanth's Deva and Coolie forget to have fun and are burdened by a cross that they unnecessarily carry throughout the 169-minute runtime."

The film marks the 171st feature in Rajinikanth's career, and its release coincided with the actor's golden jubilee.
