Mia Goth says Marvel’s Blade fell apart after early prep: 'I don’t know what’s going on with that…'

Mia Goth has shed new light on the ongoing turbulence surrounding Marvel’s long-stalled Blade reboot, and according to her, even she has no idea where things currently stand.

Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Frankenstein star revealed that production initially seemed to be moving forward once she was cast. But the momentum didn’t last. “I don’t know what’s going on with that,” she admitted, adding, “The furthest that it got with me… they flew me to Atlanta, and we did a chemistry test between Mahershala [Ali] and me, and we did a costume fitting and a wig fitting. I was very excited in the direction it was going… and then it just unravelled from there, unfortunately.”

Goth noted that she believes Marvel still intends to make the film but has no insight into why it’s taken so long. “I think that they want to make it, and it’s such an important film for them that they’re taking their time with it. I really don’t have any information… but we will see.”

The actor joined the project in 2023, with early reports suggesting this version of Blade might be set in the past. Costume pieces originally designed for the abandoned iteration by Ruth Carter were later repurposed for Ryan Coogler’s 1930s-set vampire hit Sinners. Goth was rumoured to be playing Lilith, a major supernatural antagonist in the comics.

Despite the project’s many delays, including pandemic fallout, dual industry strikes, and the departure of two directors, Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange, Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently confirmed Blade remains in development with Mahershala Ali still leading the film. Feige has acknowledged that multiple versions of the screenplay existed, including two period settings, but said the creative team has now “landed on modern day”.

Feige also defended the studio’s decision to pause production last time around. “We didn’t want to put a leather outfit on [Ali] and have him start killing vampires,” he said, explaining that the script wasn’t strong enough. “You can start and have a good script and make it a great script through production, but we didn’t feel confident we could do that on Blade. We didn’t want to do that to Mahershala and didn’t want to do that to us.”

Other cast members, including Delroy Lindo, who boarded the movie in 2021, have echoed that things “went off the rails.” Meanwhile, Ali has sidestepped questions about the project, and Goth previously told Deadline that she sensed the team “really care” and are intent on making a great film.

Marvel removed Blade from its 2025 slate late last year. Originally announced in 2019, the film’s newest script draft is reportedly being written by Eric Pearson.
