Sinners x Blade was a collaboration that no one saw coming. The Ryan Coogler film with Michael B Jordan that had a dream run at the box office, had taken clothes from Marvel's Blade reboot film, which has been long in production. The film announced in 2019 with Mahershala Ali had hit a roadblock, but is still gaining attention in a way, thanks to Sinners.
During a recent interview with ScreenCrush, Sinners producers Sev Ohanian revealed that they purchased the required costumes from Marvel, which were originally kept for Blade reboot.
"[Costume designer] Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting. At one point, that movie was going to deal with, and she's talked about this before, but at one point, that film was going to deal with the past around the same era as 'Sinners.' She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, 'Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow.' And Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price," shared Sev Ohanian as quoted by Variety.
While costumes were made for the lead cast members, “a lot of the background actors” styled their attire for the vampire thriller from the wardrobe meant for Blade.
Sinners was released on April 18 amid high expectations and eventually won positive reviews and was critically and commercially acclaimed. Coogler's first original film since 2013's Fruitvale Station, Sinners tells the story of identical twins (Michael B Jordan in a dual role) who return to their hometown in Mississippi to start a juke joint. Also starring Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell, Omar Benson Miller, and Delroy Lindo, among others, Sinners reportedly grossed over $161 million from theatres worldwide.
Coogler had recently dismissed speculations of a sequel, stating that he never thought of making a follow-up to Sinners. "I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique," said Coogler, in an interview with Ebony magazine.
