For Sobhita Dhulipala, who has often portrayed women with a quiet strength beneath a composed exterior, Vettuvam offered an opportunity to explore a different kind of agency, one that is more instinctive, uninhibited and unapologetic.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor described Vettuvam as her best work yet, explaining that she had invested more of herself in the film than in any of her previous projects. “I’ve poured all of myself into it, much more than ever before. In that sense, I feel it’s my best work,” she said, adding that while her character shares the steel and agency of women she has played before, her expression of those qualities is markedly different.

Sobhita plays Rathi in the film, a character she has described as a woman who takes charge of her own decisions rather than remaining on the sidelines of an action-driven narrative. The actor has also spoken about how Rathi challenges the familiar division in action films, where men are often given the physical confrontations while women are relegated to the emotional portions of the story. Rathi, in contrast, is unapologetic and actively drives the action.

The actor credited Ranjith with encouraging her to embrace this uninhibited side of the character. “He encouraged me to just unleash the dragon,” she said in the interview, adding that the filmmaker sees women as powerful beings and admires that strength both as a man and as a storyteller. She also described Rathi as a “front-footed” character who does what she believes in without calculating how others might perceive her. The role, she noted, allowed her to explore a personality that is “kinetic, energetic and free”, with action and dance forming part of the performance.

Vettuvam is directed by Pa Ranjith and stars Arya, VR Dinesh, Kalaiyarasan, and Shabbeer Kallarakal, among others. Described as an apocalyptic action drama spanning different time periods, the film is produced under Ranjith’s Neelam Productions banner. It is expected to release in December.
