Sobhita Dhulipala is going places, as she continues to stay busy in both the South Indian and Hindi industries, with films and web series. The actor next be seen in the Tamil film Vettuvam, directed by Pa Ranjith. With this film, she is stepping into yet another distinctive world, playing a character that allows her to challenge some familiar ideas around women in action-driven stories.
Speaking about the film, the makers recently unveiled promotional video titled ‘The World of Vettuvam’. Sobhita highlighted what drew her to Rathi, a character who is not relegated to the emotional sidelines but actively drives the action herself.
“I’ll say that typically in a film that is about action, the boys get all the fighting and the girl gets the emotional part. But here, she is the one starting half the fights! And she is so unapologetic. She’s really a badass, and it’s inspiring because I think women are actually very strong. So, here we get to see that shade of a woman who dares, and whatever dream she has, she will make it happen for herself. No complaints, no blames. She is her own boss,” said Sobhita about her role.
For Sobhita, connecting with a character does not necessarily come from finding obvious similarities with herself, but from recognising different shades of her own humanity in every role she takes on. Asked whether there are traces of her personality in her Vettuvam character, she offered a more introspective take on the relationship between an actor and the people they portray.
“See, this will sound philosophical, but I think we are all waves of the same ocean. I think we are all the same, we are one. Just different manifestations. So, I feel connected to every character I play. Tomorrow, even if I play a negative character, 100% that will also be part of my shade. So, we should be non-judgmental and embrace it. That’s all,” she said.
Sobhita earlier worked with Mani Ratnam in the Ponniyin Selvan series and has now joined hands with another talented filmmaker, Pa Ranjith. For an actor, she says, the opportunity to inhabit such contrasting cinematic spaces is part of the dream. “I think it’s the dream of every actor to be part of very, very different worlds, and these are two iconic filmmakers. But I will say though, as an actor, the subject that I respond emotionally to, my mind, my heart, my everything is there. So, it has been a true delight. I can’t wait to watch it,” she said.
