Patriot, starring Mammootty and Mohanlal, has reportedly grossed over ₹50 crore worldwide within two days of its release on May 1. Written and directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the spy thriller has opened strongly at the box office despite a mixed critical and audience response.

Trade estimates peg the film’s two-day worldwide gross at ₹50.23 crore. Overseas markets have contributed a major share, with collections said to be around ₹31.50 crore so far. In India, the film opened with ₹9.8 crore net on day one and added ₹6.15 crore on day two, taking its domestic two-day net total to ₹16.15 crore.

The strong start was widely expected, given the curiosity around the project and the reunion of Mammootty and Mohanlal on screen after a long gap. Advance bookings had also indicated solid initial demand, especially in Kerala and overseas centres. That said, the film has opened to mixed reviews. While a section of viewers praised its technical quality, performances and ambition, others were less convinced by its pacing and storytelling. Even so, the star pairing appears to have ensured a strong opening weekend turnout.

Patriot follows a scientific adviser linked to the defence establishment as he takes on a powerful corporate network. The film touches on surveillance, spyware misuse and political power games. The ensemble cast also includes Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Darshana Rajendran, Rajiv Menon, Indrans and Grace Antony. With the opening weekend still in progress, the next few days will show how well the film sustains its momentum.
