Marvel Studios' upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to unite two vastly different corners of the Marvel universe, with Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle making his big-screen MCU debut alongside Tom Holland's Spider-Man. But according to the actor, bringing the R-rated vigilante into the comparatively family-friendly Spider-Man films wasn't a decision he took lightly.
Speaking at a recent press event for the film, Bernthal said he was initially uncertain about whether The Punisher could naturally fit into the tone of the MCU's Spider-Man franchise. The actor explained that he has always been fiercely protective of Frank Castle and the character's fanbase, adding that the concern was shared by producers Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal and the rest of the creative team.
Bernthal said the filmmakers chose not to ignore what audiences might find difficult about the crossover. Instead, they embraced those questions, believing that acknowledging fans' concerns would ultimately lead to a stronger story. He added that the team worked towards making it feel as though Frank Castle had "walked out" of his gritty television stories and into Brand New Day without compromising the character's identity while still respecting the tone of Spider-Man's world.
Holland, meanwhile, said the contrast between Peter Parker and Frank Castle became the driving force behind many of their scenes together. He noted that the conflict between the two characters creates some of the film's most compelling moments and eventually leads to a payoff that is both emotionally satisfying and unsettling.
The actor also reflected on his long association with Bernthal, recalling that both of them began their Marvel journeys around the same time after auditioning for Spider-Man and The Punisher in 2015. Holland said their off-screen friendship naturally influenced their on-screen chemistry while assuring fans that the film stays true to Frank Castle's essence. "We don't compromise Frank and the Punisher in any way," he said.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day also stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo. The film is scheduled for a release in India on July 30.
