Marvel star Simu Liu has stirred fresh casting buzz around the DC Universe after publicly backing actor Melissa Barrera as a potential new Wonder Woman, praising her physical commitment and screen presence.

Speaking to JoBlo, Liu highlighted Barrera’s intensity during stunt rehearsals, saying her dedication reminded him of the iconic Amazonian warrior. “She really pushes herself. I don’t know who might be listening to this interview, James Gunn or anybody else out there. But I think she really pushes herself,” he said, adding, “There were a couple of moments during stunt training where I was like, ‘That’s Wonder Woman-esque.’ I’m just throwing it out there.”

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has already confirmed that a new Wonder Woman film is currently in development. In June 2025, Gunn revealed that the project was “being written right now,” according to Variety. The film will exist alongside an HBO series centred on Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s homeland, which Gunn described as “slow-moving, but it’s moving.”

Supergirl screenwriter Ana Nogueira was brought on board in July 2025 to pen the new Wonder Woman script. Nogueira is additionally working on a live-action Teen Titans film for the studio.

While casting has not been finalised, Gunn has previously addressed fan speculation around potential contenders. Speaking to Extra, he acknowledged that Hit Man actor Adria Arjona could be a strong fit for the role. “I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out (and thought), ‘He just followed her; that means she’s Wonder Woman,’” Gunn said, before adding, “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way.”

The character was most recently portrayed by Gal Gadot, who introduced the modern cinematic version of Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. She went on to reprise the role in Wonder Woman, Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984, along with brief, uncredited appearances in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash.
