Tom Holland admits his time in the Spider-Man costume isn’t always as glamorous as it looks on screen. The actor revealed with a laugh in a recent Esquire chat that the iconic red-and-blue suit “definitely does” get musty after long days of shooting. “I probably get a new suit every two weeks, I reckon,” he said.

Currently filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland is stepping into the role of Peter Parker for the fourth time in his own series and the seventh time overall in the Marvel universe. This outing, he says, feels especially personal. “It just feels like you’re hanging out with an old pal,” Holland reflected. “I’ve been so lucky that the fan base has been so vocal about what they love from the franchise. We’ve been able to really lean into those things… I love standing up for the character, being in the room, and making sure the decisions we make are what’s best for Peter Parker because he really does feel like one of my best friends.”

Part of Holland’s process has been paying close attention to what Spider-Man fans want from his movies. Speaking earlier this month, he admitted he actively browses online discussions to understand the pulse of the fanbase. “I really just kind of put together a vibe of what people were looking for and went to Marvel and said, ‘This is what I think we should be doing,’” Holland explained. “It’s the first time I’ve ever been allowed in that part of the process, and it’s definitely a stressful experience. But now that we’re shooting, we are shooting absolute gold.”

For Holland, making sure the movies respect the audience’s investment is key. “For me, I want to do justice to Peter Parker’s character. I want to bring the fans something that’s really worthy of their time. I’m very grateful for their investment in our franchise,” he told Esquire. “I don’t mean financially; I mean the time to go to the cinema three times. That’s a big ask.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and features returning stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon alongside franchise newcomers Sadie Sink, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Tramell Tillman. Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Punisher, while Mark Ruffalo is expected to appear as Hulk.

Sony has set the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day for July 31, 2026.
