The recent meeting between Ajith Kumar and Vijay at the Silverstone Racing Circuit in England has once again brought attention to the camaraderie between the two stars, whose careers have often been discussed through the lens of their respective fan bases. Vijay visited Ajith during the Michelin Le Mans Cup event, with videos of the former running towards Ajith and embracing him going viral.
The moment came at a time when both actors have taken markedly different paths from the ones audiences have traditionally associated them with. While Vijay is now the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Ajith has been pursuing his passion for motorsport and competing internationally. At Silverstone, their paths crossed again, this time away from the film industry.
Speaking at the Behindwoods Business Summit, Tamil Nadu Minister for Film Technology and the Cinematograph Act Rajmohan reflected on the reunion and said that it offered a lesson beyond the world of cinema and fandom. “Think about the reality. We may have fought online using the names of these two people and created so many arguments. But look at these two human beings. They have charted their own paths in life, worked hard and given their 100% to what they chose to pursue,” he said.
Rajmohan pointed out that Vijay and Ajith have each ventured into a different field while continuing to build their respective journeys. He referred to Vijay's political career and Ajith's pursuit of motorsport before turning his attention to the moment when the two met at Silverstone. “What we saw at Silverstone was one of the greatest moments in history. Two people who were described as two poles of Tamil cinema met at a very important point in their lives. One had reached an important position in sports, while the other had travelled there to support him,” Rajmohan said.
The minister said the warmth of their meeting was particularly striking given the way their names have historically been positioned against each other by sections of their fan bases. “They ran towards each other and embraced like two childhood friends meeting after a long time. Seeing that moment genuinely made me happy,” he said.
For Rajmohan, however, the significance of the reunion extended beyond Ajith and Vijay themselves. He said their journeys demonstrated the importance of concentrating on one's own path rather than viewing another person as a rival. “The lesson these two teachers have given us is simple: define your own path and give it your 100%. You don't have anyone else as your competition. Your competition is yourself,” he said.
Elaborating on the thought, Rajmohan added that the goal should be to become better than one's previous self. “You have to develop your skills, become more successful and make sure that tomorrow's version of you is better than today's version. Then, the only person you are competing with is yourself,” he explained.
