Suriya's latest outing Scene has made a strong start at the box office, with the film crossing the Rs 30 crore mark worldwide on its opening day. The action-comedy, directed by Jithu Madhavan, has also recorded a sizeable contribution from overseas markets, which account for more than a third of its worldwide earnings.
On Day 1, Friday, November 6, Scene collected Rs 19.15 crore net at the Indian box office, translating to a gross of Rs 22.25 crore, according to Sacnilk. With another Rs 12 crore coming from overseas markets, the film's worldwide gross stands at Rs 34.25 crore. It registered an overall occupancy of 55 percent across 6,167 shows in its Tamil and Telugu versions.
The Tamil version contributed the bulk of the domestic collection, earning Rs 16.15 crore net from 4,878 shows, while the Telugu version added Rs 3 crore from 1,289 shows. The Tamil version recorded an occupancy of 57.1 percent, ahead of the Telugu version's 47.1 percent. The overseas contribution is particularly significant, accounting for 35 percent of the film's worldwide gross.
Among the other releases in the Deepavali window, Scene has opened well ahead of Nayanthara's Mookuthi Amman 2, which collected Rs 1.88 crore net in India on its first day, with a gross of Rs 2.15 crore. However, Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, which arrived in theatres a day earlier on Thursday, November 5, remains ahead of both films, collecting Rs 64.85 crore net on its opening day and another Rs 48.05 crore on Friday. While Scene has made a strong start in the Tamil market, Ramayana's pan-Indian reach and multi-language release have given it a considerably wider box-office footprint.
Scene marks Suriya's third film release this year. While Suriya's Karuppu opened to Rs 21.93 crores worldwide, his sophomore film of the year, Vishwanath and Sons, grossed Rs 27.51 on the first day. Although by a small margin, this film beats Suriya's earlier two releases, which were both box office successes.
Scene marks Jithu Madhavan's Tamil directorial debut, following his Malayalam films Romancham and Aavesham. The film features Suriya as DSP Inbaraj, alongside Nazriya Nazim and Naslen, who makes his Tamil debut with the film. Nazriya returns to Tamil cinema after 12 years, while composer Sushin Shyam also makes his Tamil debut with the project. The film has received a positive response from critics, with Cinema Express praising Suriya's performance and the turns by Nazriya and Naslen.
