Suriya has been having an eventful year with not just one, but two releases in 2026. After witnessing massive success with RJ Balaji's Karuppu, the actor entered the family drama genre once again after years with Vishwanath and Sons from director Venky Atluri. Upon release on Friday, August 14, the film opened with over Rs 15 crore at the box office in India, almost coming neck-to-neck with the opening day collections of Karuppu.
According to trade website Sacnilk, Vishwanath & Sons opened with a net collection of Rs 15.15 crore in India, while its gross collection stands at Rs 17.51 crore. Overseas, the film has grossed Rs 10 crore, taking its total worldwide gross collection to Rs 27.51 crore.
While a lion's share of the collection came from the Tamil version (Rs 9.15 crore), the Telugu audience have also embraced and celebrated the film, registering Rs 6 crore in revenue. Reactions and reviews from critics and audiences have been mostly positive with them showering praise for Venky Atluri's wholesome, feel-good storyline and engaging screenplay, and for handling a taboo topic with sensitivity. However, the film has been criticised for its predictability and lags in various portions.
As reported earlier, the story of Vishwanath & Sons follows Suriya's character as a competitive and driven Sanjay Vishwanath (Suriya), who is goes on to win the gold medal for pistol shooting at the Paris 2024 Olympics. When his only child Abhay is diagnosed with a grave health problem, it prompts Sanjay to reconnect with his child's surrogate mother Maddy (Mamitha Baiju), with whom he is hesitant to build a relationship with, in fear of it breaking down.
In our CE review of the film, we had written, "As long as the film stays focussed on the antics of Nirmala, Maddy, Sanjay, and the young baby at the centre of it all, Vishwanath and Sons is the thorough family entertainer that Indian cinema desperately needed. However, once it shifts to the story of Anjali (A miscast Raveena Tandon) and her daughter Meghana (Bhavani Sre), Vishwanath and Sons becomes a drag and a half." Given the current trend in collections and the Independence day holiday weekend, the movie is expected to get a boost in revenue and cross the Rs 50 crore mark soon.
Besides Suriya and Mamitha Baiju, the film also stars Radikaa Sarathkumar, Rajiv Menon, Raveena Tandon, Nasser, Sudha, Raghu Babu, Sunil Reddy, Bhavani Sre, Viva Harsha, Kaali Venkat, George Maryan, Hyper Aadhi, Sreeja Ravi, Sarvadaman Banerjee, Mathew Varghese, Kalyani Natarajan, Karate Karthik, and Master Charvik.
The film has music composed by GV Prakash Kumar, cinematography handled by Nimish Ravi and editing by Naveen Nooli.
