Despite weekday drops in revenue, Suriya's latest film Karuppu continues to hold strong at the box office and has now crossed a significant milestone of Rs 80 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. After five days in theatres, the film's countrywide revenue stands at Rs 95.05 crore while the worldwide total has breached Rs 160 crore. If the trend continues, RJ Balaji's action drama will soon cross the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide with the state's total entering the coveted Rs 100 crore club.
Karuppu earned a whopping Rs 68 crore across India on its first weekend, thanks to the positive reviews for Suriya's performance as a lawyer-cum-deity and RJ Balaji's engaging screenplay. However, the film witnessed its first weekday slump on Monday with close to Rs 15 crore in earnings, a 49.6 per cent drop in revenue from Sunday. The dip continued through Tuesday with Rs 12.75 crore in collections, a 10.8 per cent dip from Monday's revenue. This brings total India gross collections to Rs 110.04 crore and total India net collections to Rs 95.05 crore so far.
Karuppu stars Trisha as the female lead, reuniting with her Aaru (2005) co-star Suriya. The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi. RJ Balaji also plays a key role in the film.
An excerpt from our CE's review of the film read, "Apart from Suriya and Balaji, Indrans gets the lion’s share of the film’s runtime, and the veteran delivers a powerful performance as a person defeated by the system. Along with Anagha, Indrans holds the key to the film's emotional core, and when the eventuality occurs, Karuppu is truly elevated. This elevation works better for the film because it doesn’t come at the expense of the narrative."
