Director RJ Balaji is awaiting the release of his next film, Karuppu, starring Suriya in the lead role. Also starring Trisha, the film is slated for a May 14 release in theatres. The upcoming film marks Balaji's third directorial venture; earlier, he made his debut with Mookuthi Amman, starring him opposite Nayanthara, and helmed Veetla Vishesham with NJ Saravanan.
Recently, RJ Balaji spoke about Veetla Vishesham, which also starred him in an important role. In an interview with SS Music, the filmmaker made a candid admission about the film, a remake of the Hindi drama Badhaai Ho, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Neena Gupta, and Gajraj Rao.
"I felt that I could have done a better job with Veetla Vishesham. I also liked the film; we wrote it well, although we could have done it better. We made it in a fast pace and could have handled the technical aspects in a better way," the filmmaker shared.
Balaji added that the COVID restrictions at the time of its making contributed to a hastened making process, as most of the actors who were part of the cast were septuagenarians. At the same time, he said that this is not an excuse for making a film that did not meet his expectations.
"People started watching big films in theatres after COVID. When my film came out in theatres, Vikram was in its third or fourth week and was running to packed houses. In that scenario, when we asked people to watch our small, compact film in theatres, it did not go down as well as I expected. Many people do like the film, though."
The filmmaker also shared an incident where veteran art director Thota Tharani met him at a wedding and expressed his and his family's admiration for Veetla Vishesham.
