Vijay's Jana Nayagan has been mired in legal battles and controversies since January this year with the CBFC refusing to grant certification for the film, which led to the actioner being postponed from its initial release date. Since then, the issues surrounding it have only deepened, with noted film personalities and those in political power voicing support for the actor against those with "vested interests" delaying the film's release.
With the model code of conduct already in place ahead of Tamil Nadu assembly elections on April 23, the film is unlikely to be released until the results are announced in May. In the meantime, the CBFC had recently recommended that the Election Commission of India (ECI) make an assessment of the actor-politician film before they could provide a certificate.
Filmmaker Ameer Sultan has now voiced his concerns over the issue, alleging that a “political angle is being concealed within it.”
In an interview with ANI, Ameer said, "I don’t recall any instance where the Censor Board said that a film must be reviewed and decided upon by the Election Commission. This seems to be happening for the first time. If that is the case, we cannot deny, and must accept, that there is a significant political angle being concealed in it."
Listing the reasons why the film may not have been granted certification by the CBFC, he said, "They cite factors such as ‘excessive violence’ or ‘scenes that could disrupt social harmony.’ There have also been instances where specific scenes were removed on similar grounds." He also cited Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam as an example that ran into several controversies. However, Ameer wondered why the CBFC was concealing what the exact issues are the film "The Censor Board is not clearly stating what the issue is, and those associated with the film are also not revealing the full details. It can be understood that there is politics involved in this," he noted.
Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, also stars Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Pooja Hegde, and Narain, among others. There has also been persistent buzz that Jana Nayagan may be a remake of Nandamuri Balakrishna’s 2023 Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, a speculation strengthened by the trailer, though the makers have stopped short of confirming it.
Jana Nayagan has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan and editing by Pradeep E Ragav. Along with KVN Productions, the film is co-produced by Jagadish Palanisamy and Lohith NK.
