Recently, we reported that the CBFC recommended that the Election Commission of India (ECI) make an assessment of actor-politician Vijay's Jana Nayagan before they could provide a censor certificate. On Thursday, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik addressed a media conference to clarify why the H Vinoth directorial may need the approval of the ECI.
For the unversed, the model code of conduct is currently in order as the Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections are scheduled for April 23. Queries arose about whether the film of an actor who is also a political leader requires approval from the ECI during the model code of conduct. Clarifying the same, Archana said that the commission will have to examine the matter and take a decision which is appropriate, as the body has not faced such an issue in the past.
Jana Nayagan's release, initially slated for January 9, was postponed after the producers claimed that a CBFC committee had evaluated the film in December 2025 and had made recommendations for excisions, which the production house confirmed to have carried out. Later a member of the original evaluating committee filed a complaint, stating that the film violated the sentiment of certain religions and did not consult with the armed forces before using their logos in the film. The chairman of the CBFC then moved to send the film to a revising committee.
Jana Nayagan also stars Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Pooja Hegde, and Narain, among others. There has also been persistent buzz that Jana Nayagan may be a remake of Nandamuri Balakrishna’s 2023 Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, a speculation strengthened by the trailer, though the makers have stopped short of confirming it.
Jana Nayagan has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan and editing by Pradeep E Ragav. Along with KVN Productions, the film is co-produced by Jagadish Palanisamy and Lohith NK. The film is said to mark Vijay's last before his full-fledged stint in politics.
