Actor Vijay Sethupathi remains one of the busiest leading stars in the South Indian film industry, actively working across multiple languages and formats. After being last seen in Thalaivan Thalaivii, Pandiraj’s rural drama co-starring Nithya Menen, the actor also saw the release of the long-delayed silent film Gandhi Talks.
Up next, Vijay Sethupathi has a packed slate with nearly nine projects in his kitty, including the web series Muthu Engira Kaattaan, directed by M Manikandan. The series is set to premiere on JioHotstar on March 27.
In an interview with Galatta Plus, he confirmed his presence as a cameo in Rajinikanth-Nelson's Jailer 2, while also sharing that scripting works for Nithilan Saminathan's Maharaja 2 had been completed. "I am eagerly waiting to hear what he has written," he said, teasing fans with this major update.
Besides these two films, he has completed shooting for Train, Mysskin's long-delayed project, Puri Jagannadh’s Slum Dog and an untitled project with Balaji Tharaneetharan. It was recently reported that Vijay Sethupathi is reuniting with director Thiagarajan Kumararaja after Super Deluxe (2019) for Pocket Novel. The shoot for the film is currently ongoing. The ensemble cast for it includes Raj B Shetty, Malavika Mohanan, and Kishore.
The actor also revealed that he is "completely unaware" of his role in Vetri Maaran's Arasan, headlined by Silambarasan, for which filming for his portions are yet to start. Among his other projects are a much-awaited film with Mani Ratnam and a movie with Magizh Thirumeni, who last helmed Vidaamuyarchi with Ajith Kumar. While script reading for Mani Ratnam's movie is in progress, details regarding Magizh's film are unknown.
However, excitement for Maharaja's sequel has been high among fans considering the success of the original film. Featuring a stellar cast including Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Singampuli and Natty Natraj, the story revolves around Maharaja (played by Sethupathi), a barber from Chennai who visits a police station to reclaim his stolen dustbin, only for the situation to take an unexpected turn, revealing deeper intentions. The film went on to become a critical and commercial hit for Vijay Sethupathi and Nithilan. It was also released in China where it found further success and broke box office records.
