The Tamil film industry, prominent politicians in the state, and fans are expressing their sadness at the passing of legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay visited the filmmaker's residence in Chennai and paid his final respects to the director, who passed away earlier this Wednesday.
Sharing pictures of his visit on social media, Vijay wrote that he is "overwhelmed with profound sorrow and grief" upon learning the director's passing. The CM highlighted the filmmaker's legacy, saying he "created several successful films infused with the vibrant essence of rural life, leaving an indelible mark unique to him in the world of Tamil cinema."
While Vijay highlighted Bharathiraja's awards, including the Padma Shri, he also highlighted the contributions that he made towards shaping the careers of several artists.
"His contributions in shaping generations of artists will forever stand etched in the history of Tamil cinema," the CM wrote.
Vijay has not starred in any Bharathiraja film. Reportedly, the CM's father SA Chandrasekhar discussed a project set in a village with the director, although it did not take shape. According to Vijay, the filmmaker's passing "represents an irreplaceable and monumental loss to the Tamil film industry." Vijay added, "I extend my deepest condolences to his grieving family, friends, members of the film fraternity, and fans. I pray that his soul rests in peace at the divine feet of the Lord."
The CM also noted that the government will give Bharathiraja an official ceremonial farewell following his death as a sign of respect and recognition for the important contributions that he made to the film industry. He will be among the few film personalities from Tamil cinema without a political background to be accorded with a ceremonial farewell with state honours.
