When Suriya's 45th film, Karuppu, was just announced, there were reports suggesting that the film's director, RJ Balaji, initially approached Vijay for the film and later rewrote it for Suriya eventually. At Elantra '26, a recent college cultural event, RJ Balaji addressed these rumours.

Replying to an inquisitive college-goer, RJ Balaji said, "I started writing Karuppu on August 21, 2023. Every three months the story kept taking different shapes, and then different actors came to my mind to play the protagonist."

While the writing stage gave him a few ideas, as his ideas materialised, he only had Suriya in mind. "But the reports about casting any other actor are just rumours. I wrote Karuppu for Suriya sir and have made it only for him. I narrated only 40 minutes of the story to him, and he immediately loved it. We started shooting for the film just a month after the narration," he revealed.

In the same event, the actor-director was also asked about casting Trisha in the film. "I love Trisha ma'am as much as I love Suriya sir. We became very good friends after this film. It's been nearly 28 years since Suriya Sir came into the industry, and Trisha Ma'am has also completed about 23 years. So they have similar experience and are both senior actors. I assure you that their scenes in the film will be fun to watch," he expressed.

Indrans, Mansoor Ali Khan, Natty, Swaswika, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, and Sshivada, among others, play supporting roles in Karuppu. RJ Balaji will also be seen in a cameo role in the film. It is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures' SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu.

Karuppu's technical crew features music by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography by GK Vishnu, editing by Kalaivanan, art direction by Arun Venjaramoodu, and stunt choreography by Vikram Mor. A release date for the film is yet to be announced by the makers.
