As two mammoth films - Vijay's Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi - prepare to clash at the box office in a few days, there was another film that fans were eagerly looking forward to catch in theatres during the festive season. Suriya's 45th film Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji was also expected to arrive on the big screens during the same period, but the makers have decided to avert the clash. While uncertainty continues to linger surrounding the film's release date, noted film distributor Tirupur Subramaniam has now revealed that the action drama can be expected for a January end or February release.
In a recent interview with Cineulagam, Tirupur Subramaniam said, "I spoke to SR Prabhu regarding releasing the film for Pongal. However, he said that two big films are already hitting screens during the time. 'If we also join the race, it wouldn't be good as theatrical revenue and screens would be split. Hence, we are planning for a February release,' he told me. So, you can expect the film towards the end of January or February."
On New Year, Suriya had shared a new poster of Karuppu, writing his wishes to public, expressing gratitude for the love he has been receiving. Within minutes RJ Balaji shared a behind-the-scenes still from the action drama saying, "This year will be great. Karuppu will be worth your wait."
Karuppu also stars Trisha as the female lead, reuniting her with her Aaru (2005) co-star Suriya. Indrans, Mansoor Ali Khan, Natty, Swaswika, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, and Sshivada, among others play supporting roles. RJ Balaji will also be seen in a cameo role in the film. It is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures' SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu and has music by Sai Abhyankkar.
The teaser, which was released in July last year, presented Suriya in a 'mass' avatar. The actor seemed to be playing a lawyer in the film which is set in a rural backdrop. He is looked at as a saviour, an almost deity-like who delivers justice to commonfolk.
Karuppu's technical crew also features cinematography by GK Vishnu, editing by Kalaivanan, art direction by Arun Venjaramoodu, and stunt choreography by Vikram Mor. The project also marks a reunion for Suriya with his NGK producers, as well as RJ Balaji with his Sorgavaasal makers — SR Prabhu and SR Prakash Babu of Dream Warrior Pictures.
