KS Ravikumar, who shared the screen with Dhanush in Thanga Magan, is reuniting with him in the upcoming Vignesh Raja directorial, Kara. During a recent interview for the film, the veteran director and actor opened up about a film that he was supposed to do with Dhanush but eventually got shelved.
Revealing the title, he said in an interview with Cineulagam, “We had planned a film with Dhanush, titled Odi Pogalama. Kamal Haasan himself came and lit the kuthu vilakku at the pooja and inaugurated the project. Kasthuri Raja and I had joined hands for it, and we completed the pooja as well."
On the problems that came midway, he continued, "Around that time, a producer from that banner approached us. He said they had already made a film with Vijay, which was ready for release, and requested me to direct another film for them. He asked for my dates so they could start a project before releasing the Vijay film."
He then said that they even made a lookbook for Dhanush for the film. "Dhanush, however, was extremely busy then. So Kasthuri Raja arranged the dates, and I agreed to direct the film. We even did a full photoshoot — we created something like an invitation book, where each page had Dhanush in a different look, with varied expressions. The story was by Ramesh Khanna," he explained.
When asked why the film didn't materialise, he said, "But after the Vijay film was released, the producer ran into financial issues. Because of that, the project could not move forward and was eventually dropped.”
Kara is the sophomore directorial of Vignesh Raja, who made his debut with Por Thozhil (2022). The film is produced by Ishari K Ganesh under his Vels Film International banner, with Kushmitha Ganesh, his daughter, serving as a co-producer. Besides Dhanush, Kara also stars Mamitha Baiju as Selli, KS Ravikumar as Kandhasaami, Suraj Venjaramoodu as police officer Bharathan, Karunaas as Kasi Maayan and Jayaram as Muthu Selvan.
On the technical front, it has cinematography by Theni Eswar, music by GV Prakash, editing by Sreejith Sarang, and art direction by Mayapandi. It is set to hit theatres on April 30 with dubs in Hindi and Telugu as well, apart from Tamil.
