Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) had staged a massive protest in Chennai seeking a ban on Bigg Boss Tamil, noting that the the popular reality show is "destroying culture, ethics and values" of Tamil Nadu citizens.
Over 100 police officers were deployed near the Vels Film City to ensure safety as protesters resorted to beating effigies of Vijay Sethupathi to protest against the show causing harm to the Tamil community. TVK is the ally of the ruling party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
The polical party's leader and MLA Velumurugan said the show was airing "disgusting body movements, kissing scenes and bedroom scenes". "The script writers don’t care if the Tamil community suffers any harm. They are running the programme on the basis that money is most important," he said, criticising Bigg Boss Tamil's content for not being friendly to all sections of the audience. He said it cannot be viewed in the presence of youth and children. "They have only held off from showing sexual intercourse until now," he stated, adding, "My question is if Vijay TV should make money by continuing to host such a disgusting, low-class, indecent programme."
Velmurugan underlined that he approached Tamil Nadu assembly speaker Appavu regarding the same. "If the Speaker does not admit the motion for discussion and if the Chief Minister, as well as the IT and Broadcast departments, do not ban it, we will stage a major protest inside Bigg Boss arena and at Vijay Television, along with several thousand women," he said.
Bigg Boss Tamil season 9 is currently airing on Vijay TV. The show began with 24 contestants. Six members have already been evicted with one housemate walking out of the show. Vijay Sethupathi had returned as a host for the second time in a row for this season.
