Rajinikanth’s Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has shown signs of revival at the box office after a week of steady declines. On its tenth day, the film collected around Rs 10 crore across languages, marking its first upward trend in the second weekend, as per a report on Sacnilk.com. This takes the film’s total India collections to an estimated Rs 251 crore.
The Tamil version continues to dominate with over Rs 150 crore earned so far, while the Telugu, Hindi and Kannada versions have contributed Rs 52.7 crore, Rs 28.3 crore and Rs 2.2 crore, respectively.
The film, which opened on August 14, stormed past Rs 150 crore in its opening weekend alone, a feat that only a handful of Indian films have managed in recent years. It also set records on its first day, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil opener of all time by surpassing Lokesh’s own Leo starring Vijay. However, Coolie witnessed a sharp decline in weekday earnings, slipping from Rs 65 crore on its first day to single digits by Day 6.
The trend briefly raised concerns about its longevity, especially after collections touched a series low of Rs 5.85 crore on Day 9. But the second Saturday resurgence has injected fresh momentum into its box office run. With the current pace, Coolie is expected to comfortably inch closer to the Rs 275 crore mark in the coming days, though it may still take some time before it challenges the Rs 300 crore milestone.
Backed by Sun Pictures, Coolie features an ensemble cast including Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Upendra and Aamir Khan. The film has music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan and editing by Philomin Raj.
An excerpt from Cinema Express’ review reads: “The reliable Anirudh is effective in most portions, giving the film the right amount of intrigue and massiness, and overcompensates for the contrivances in the narrative when all the cards are laid on the table. For a film that wants to rely more on the emotional journey of a loner coming to terms with loss and longing, Coolie takes too long a time to get there.”
