Netflix renews crime drama Dept. Q for season two

Netflix is heading back to Edinburgh with a second season of its crime drama Dept. Q, just two and a half months after the show’s premiere.

Created by Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit) and based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s bestselling novels, the series stars Matthew Goode as Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck, who investigates cold cases from a basement office alongside his unconventional team. Alexej Manvelov, Leah Byrne, and Jamie Sives co-star.

The cast for Dept Q includes Chloe Pirrie, Mark Bonnar, Alexej Manvelov, Leah Byrne, Tom Bulpett, Shirley Henderson, Kate Dickie, and Kelly Macdonald. The first season of the series premiered on Netflix on May 29.

The renewal follows strong critical response and impressive viewership. Dept. Q remained in Netflix’s global top 10 for six weeks, logging 222 million viewing hours—roughly equal to 27 million complete watch-throughs. In the U.S. alone, the show earned 47.57 million hours across four weeks on Nielsen’s streaming charts.

Bullock and Charlotte Moore also executive produce the series, with Qureshi and Levin overseeing the project for Netflix.
