The Queen's Gambit, Walter Tevis's best-selling novel that turned into a popular Netflix series, is getting a stage musical adaptation. Obie Award winner Whitney White (Jaja's African Hair Braiding), a playwright (Primary Trust), and Oscar-nominated singer-songwriter Mitski are slated to write the book and lyrics.

Producers Level Forward revealed on social media today that the stage adaptation—which was initially revealed in 2021—is proceeding as planned, confirming Mitski's involvement in the musical.

Mitski said of her involvement in the stage adaptation, per The Hollywood Reporter: “Before Level Forward even brought the idea of making a musical of The Queen’s Gambit, I was a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel. So I was already determined to be a member of this team.”

She continued: "And then I met Eboni and Whitney, and my determination grew tenfold! I absolutely had to be a part of this! I am ecstatic to get to work with all of these amazing creatives, who’ve each built beautiful and unique repertoires of their own."

Mitski earned an Oscar nomination for her song This is a Life in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

The show will be directed by Whitney White and produced by production company Level Forward. The cast for the same is yet to be revealed.

The Queen's Gambit miniseries, which was released in 2020 on Netflix, is based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. The plot, which starts in the middle of the 1950s and goes into the 1960s, centres on the life of fictional American chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), who battles alcohol and drug addiction while rising to the top of the game.

The Queen's Gambit won 11 Emmy Awards in 2021, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
