Veteran makeup artist Pandian, who made significant contributions to Malayalam cinema and several other South Indian film industries, passed away at the age of 74. He breathed his last at his residence in Virugambakkam, Chennai. His last film association was with Sathyan Anthikad's Malayalam film Hridayapoorvam.

Over a career spanning five decades, Pandian worked with several celebrated directors and superstars across different generations in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu cinema, leaving his mark on the Indian film industry.

Born as Pandian Velu in 1955 in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, to Velu and Thayamma, Pandian began his journey in Malayalam cinema at the age of 16. He started as an assistant to Krishnarajan, the personal makeup artist of legendary malayalam actor Sathyan. He went on to become an independent makeup artist in 1978 with the film Madalasa.

Having witnessed the evolution of the makeup department in Indian cinema, Pandian worked with some of the industry's most iconic actors, including NT Rama Rao (NTR), Prem Nazir, Sathyan, SV Ranga Rao, Krishna, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Mammootty and Mohanlal, among many others.

Despite working across multiple film industries, Pandian shared a particularly close bond with Malayalam filmmaker Sathyan Anthikad. Initially known as Sathyan Anthikad's personal makeup artist, Pandian collaborated with the director on several films, beginning with Kurukkante Kalyanam. Their relationship extended well beyond their professional association, reflecting a deep friendship and mutual affection.

A testament to their bond was Sathyan Anthikad's decision to extend the shooting schedule of Manassinakkare until Pandian recovered from heart surgery. Their association continued over the years, with Hridayapoorvam marking Pandian's final film.

In recognition of his contribution to cinema, Pandian received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Makeup Artist in 2001 for his work in Madhuranombarakattu.

Pandian is married to his wife, Lakshmi, and their two children, Anitha and Thannu. His passing marks the end of an illustrious journey in cinema, but his artistry and contributions across generations will remain part of the industry's legacy.
