For Kannada audiences, S Janaki was the voice behind some of the state's most cherished songs. From devotional classics like 'Poojisalende Hoogala Thande', 'Bidenu Ninna Paada', 'Shiva Shiva Ennada Naaligey Eke' and 'Nambide Naadadevathe' to evergreen romantic melodies such as 'Banallu Neene', 'Bhuviyallu Neene', 'Jotheyali Jothe Jotheyali', 'Yaava Janmada Maitri', 'Ninna Savi Nenape' and 'Anuraga Enaythu' her songs have remained favourites across generations. Timeless numbers including 'Karedaru Kelade', 'Sanyasi Sanyasi', 'Teredide Manege Baa Athithi', 'Nagu Endide', 'Hoovondu Beku Ballige' and 'Baanigondu Elle Ellide' continue to be heard decades after they were first recorded, a testament to the enduring appeal of her voice.
She sang alongside some of Indian cinema's greatest playback singers, including PB Srinivas, Dr Rajkumar, SP Balasubrahmanyam and KJ Yesudas. A memorable milestone in Kannada cinema came when Dr Rajkumar recorded his first duet with Janaki for 'Tambittu Manava' from Mahishasura Mardini. Their partnership would go on to produce several unforgettable songs that remain treasured by Kannada music lovers.
It wasn't just audiences who admired Janaki. She was the first choice for many of the finest music directors of her time. GK Venkatesh created unforgettable songs with her, including 'Nambide Naadadevathe' from Sandhya Raaga and 'Karedaru Kelade' from Sanadi Appanna. Rajan-Nagendra, too, found one of their defining voices in Janaki, with her songs in films like Eradu Kanasu, Hombisilu, Gaali Maathu, Chandana Gombe and Naa Ninna Bidalare becoming enduring favourites.
Her collaboration with Hamsalekha shaped an entire era of Kannada film music. Together with SP Balasubrahmaniam, they delivered hit after hit in films such as Premaloka, Ranadheera, Anjada Gandu and Kindari Jogi. Janaki sang in more than 40 films composed by Hamsalekha, leaving behind a remarkable collection of songs that continue to be loved.
She shared an equally memorable musical bond with Ilaiyaraaja. While she was one of the defining voices of his Tamil compositions, Kannada audiences will forever associate the duo with 'Jotheyali Jothe Jotheyali' from Geetha, one of the most iconic love songs in Kannada cinema. She also gave unforgettable renditions of 'Sanyasi Sanyasi' from Edakallu Guddada Mele and Kuvempu's 'Teredide Manege Baa Athithi' in Hosabelaku.
Janaki also worked extensively with Vijaya Bhaskar, lending her voice to memorable songs in films such as Gejje Pooje, Belli Moda, Upasane and Seetha. No matter the composer or genre, she had an extraordinary ability to make every song feel deeply personal.
Among all the songs she recorded, 'Shiva Shiva Ennada Naaligey Eke' from Hemavathi, composed by L Vaidyanathan, held a special place in her heart. Janaki often described it as one of the most difficult songs she had ever sung and it remained one of the works she was most proud of throughout her career.
