Long before her passing, a touching incident revealed the deep affection S Janaki had for Karnataka and its people. During the 2014 Karnataka Rajyotsava Awards, a simple word from actor and politician Umashree left the legendary singer overwhelmed with emotion.
While accepting the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 2014, Janaki looked back on her journey in music.
"I entered the film industry in 1957. Since then, I have sung thousands of songs. Most of the songs I have sung are in Kannada, followed by other languages. The greatest award I have received is the love of my fans. This honour has made me very happy," she said.
She then recalled how Umashree had personally called to invite her to the ceremony.
"I told her I already had another commitment and wished I had been informed a little earlier. But she insisted that I should attend. Then she said, 'You are like my mother.' The moment she called me 'Amma,' I couldn't hold back my tears. My fans too call me 'Amma.' I accepted this award for them," Janaki said.
She also revealed that she had received numerous phone calls and messages from fans urging her to accept the award.
"I received so many calls and messages asking me to accept this honour. I have accepted it for all of you," she said, addressing the gathering in Kannada.
The emotional moment explained the special relationship Janaki shared with Karnataka. It was a bond built over decades through her timeless songs, her love for the Kannada language and the affection she received from generations of listeners. Even today, that heartfelt moment remains one of the many memories that define the legendary singer's extraordinary life.
Janaki, who passed away on July 11 after suffering a heart attack following multiple organ failure, leaves behind a musical legacy that spans more than six decades.
