Defying torrential rains and expectations, the Kannada comedy Su From So has emerged as a surprise hit in Kerala. Dubbed into Malayalam, the film has expanded from 75 to around 175 screens across the state in its second week, riding purely on word-of-mouth praise.

Unlike previous Kannada successes in Kerala, such as the KGF franchise and Kantara, which leaned heavily on spectacle and action, Su From So is a rural, slice-of-life comedy. Directed and headlined by JP Thuminad, the film follows a youngster trying to shake off the ghost of an old woman from a nearby village. Its lush setting, sharp humour, and impressive Malayalam dubbing have made audiences embrace it as if it were a native production like a yesteryear Sathyan Anthikad film.

From families to college crowds, cinema halls have seen an outpouring of laughter and nostalgia, with many viewers remarking that it’s been years since a comedy struck such a chord. Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Sankar praised the film on social media, calling it “smart commercial cinema” and a product of “conviction, teamwork, having fun, and forgetting the results.” The film was distributed in Kerala by actor-producer Dulquer Salmaan through his company Wayfarer Films.

Su From So's Telugu dubbed version is set to release on August 8, with hopes high for a similar reception. With this film, co-producer and actor Raj B Shetty, who also plays a pivotal role in it, and director Thuminad have proven that well-crafted comedies rooted in local flavours can transcend language barriers and win hearts far beyond their home turf.
