Horror continues to be a hot commodity in Indian cinema. Writer-director Vikram Bhatt's Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past is the latest horror film to have a good opening at the India box office. According to a report from the industry tracker Sacnilk, the film has earned more than all the other major films that released on June 12 in the country.
So far, the film has earned a gross collection of 6.78 crore from theatres and a net collection of 5.75 crore. In comparison, Imtiaz Ali's critically appreciated film Main Vaapas Aaunga, Kangana Ranaut's Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, Manoj Bajpayee's Governor, Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, and the celebrated horror film Backrooms have earned gross collections of 3.60 crore, 2.93 crore, 2.46 crore, 5.16 crore, and 3.06 crore respectively, at the domestic box office.
The performance of Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past is indicative of the popularity of Vikram Bhatt's long-running horror franchise among the audience in India. Remarkably, the film has hit theatres with very little promotion nationwide but has surpassed the box office collection of all the other biggies.
Interestingly, according to Sacnilk data, the Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past box office collection jumped from 2.95 crore on Friday to 3.84 crore on Saturday. The tracker is yet to release Sunday box office numbers for the film.
It is worth noting that reviews have largely been negative for the film, starring Mimoh Chakraborty, Chetna Pande, Shruti Prakash, Gaurav Bajpai, Praneet Bhatt, and Hemant Pandey. Recent horror films in Hindi have done really well at the box office, despite receiving mixed to negative reviews from critics (Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 being a case in point). According to producers Anand Pandit and Rakesh Juneja, the Vikram Bhatt film offers "a spine-chilling horror experience packed with mystery, fear, and dark secrets from the past."
