Tom Holland has revealed that he learnt about Robert Downey Jr’s return to the Marvel universe well before the official announcement and shared the news with Zendaya almost immediately.

Speaking in a recent interaction with Cinemania, Holland said Downey personally informed him about his comeback, which will see the actor return not as Iron Man but as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

Recalling the moment, Holland said he did not keep the information to himself for long. “I think I hung up the phone and said [to Zendaya], ‘Downey is coming back,’” he said. The revelation has caught fans’ attention partly because Holland has long built a reputation for accidentally revealing Marvel secrets ahead of time. Despite that, the actor said he managed to keep this development under wraps publicly.

Holland added that Marvel has become more cautious about how much information reaches him. Referring to his reputation for spoilers, he joked that the studio deliberately avoids giving him too many sensitive details.

At the same time, the Spider-Man actor admitted he is curious about what Downey’s return means for Peter Parker and how the new direction will fit into the larger Marvel storyline. This is not the first time Holland has spoken about knowing in advance. During an appearance on the Rich Roll podcast last year, he revealed he had been in touch with Downey regarding his Marvel comeback and called it a difficult secret to hold onto.

Meanwhile, Holland and Zendaya have been promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is set for release on July 31. The couple will also share screen space in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, scheduled to release on July 17.

Earlier this month, Holland also confirmed that he and Zendaya got married this year.
