Obsession and Backrooms have been the main points of discussion among horror film fans over the last few days. Made on modest budgets, both films have become bona fide successes and have received critical acclaim. Now, the films are set to be referenced in a comical way in Scary Movie 7, the upcoming chapter in the long-running horror spoof franchise.

In a conversation with Variety, ahead of the release of Scary Movie 6, writer-actor Marlon Wayans suggested that the upcoming instalment in the spoof franchise will pay hat tips to the two horror films mentioned above. "Wait for Scary Movie 7, and we will come back and we are going to get us some Backrooms and we are going to get some Obsession," Wayans said.

Interestingly, some moments from Obsession have already become the subjects of memes and trolls on social media.

For the unversed, the Scary Movie films make fun of horror films that precede their release. For example, the first film in the franchise has many moments that lampoon Scream. The subsequent instalments depict many horror films in a humorous light, such as The Exorcist, Poltergeist, The Amityville Horror, The Haunting, The Ring, Signs, and Paranormal Activity, among others.

Critics have been mostly negative about the Scary Movie films, in general, with the first part getting more positive feedback as compared to the rest. However, each of the films in the franchise has tasted commercial success, earning a reported cumulative collection of around $900 million at the global box office.

Featuring Marlon Wayans as a writer and actor, the sixth instalment in the franchise is set for a June 12 release in theatres.
