Earlier this year, we reported about Paramount Pictures announcing the development of a new film in the Scary Movie franchise, alongside Miramax. The latest from the project is that Wayans Brothers, the franchise creators, reunite for the upcoming film. They are not only writing the film but are also producing it with Rick Alvarez. Keenen Ivory Wayans is the screenwriter and director of the first two Scary Movie films. Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans starred in and wrote those two films.
"We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise. The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world," said Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman.
Scary Movie films parody earlier horror features, such as I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream, to name two. There are four films in the Scary Movie franchise, which started in 2000 with Keenen Ivory Wayans as its director and Anna Faris and Regina Hall as its leads. The upcoming project comes under the first-look deal between Paramount Pictures and Miramax. The makers are yet to reveal plot and cast details.
Paramount Pictures is distributing the next Scary Movie instalment, with Miramax financing it. The announcement of the new film comes hot on the heels of Glickman's appointment as Miramax's Chief Executive Officer.
