Despite positive reviews for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the film has managed to open only behind James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash. While the third film in the Avatar franchise made $13.3 million in ticket sales for the fifth week straight, as per early estimates on Sunday, The Bone Temple trailed behind with just $13 million through Sunday.
Helmed by Nia DaCosta, The Bone Temple stars Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell and is backed by Sony Pictures. While it is expected to make at least $15 million by the end of Monday, it still leaves it behind the Sam Worthington starrer, with projected collections for the film standing at $17 million. This comes as a surprise, as The Bone Temple has made $16.2 million from 61 markets globally.
Back in June 2025, 28 Years Later opened to $30 million. The fact that the sequel comes less than a year after the previous instalment may also be a contributing factor for the underwhelming response. As per earlier analysis, the film was projected to make at atleast $20 million by Monday. However, with the current numbers, breaking even is far off, as the budget for the film was reportedly $63 million, excluding marketing and promotions.
DaCosta is familiar with the horror genre, with one of her previous directorials being Candyman (2019). While 28 Years Later director Danny Boyle did not direct the film, he served as the producer on the film. Writer for the film Alex Garland also serves as a producer on the film along with Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernard Bellew. Cillian Murphy, who led the cast of 28 Days Later (2002), served as an executive producer on the film. Sony Pictures and Columbia backed the film.
