On Wednesday, Netflix dropped a video featuring the logo for the upcoming film Narnia: The Magician's Nephew and a photograph of filmmaker Greta Gerwig from the set. The photograph shows Gerwig overseeing the production. The film is based on CS Lewis’s The Magician's Nephew, which is part of his The Chronicles of Narnia novel series.
The film stars David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell in the lead roles, along with Emma Mackey, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, and Carey Mulligan. The cast also includes Ciarán Hinds, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma.
Recently, Greta Gerwig recently said that she read Lewis’s novel for the first time in her childhood. "I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life," she said to Netflix Tudum. The filmmaker added that it was unimaginable for her to direct films, let alone a cinematic adaptation of the book, calling it "the honour of a lifetime".
She added, "Because of CS Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me. It transformed me."
Narnia: The Magician's Nephew has wrapped production. Its producers include Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber-Smith, and Gerwig herself. Netflix is set to distribute it in North America, whereas Sony Pictures Entertainment holds the distribution rights outside of the region.
The film is slated for a February 12, 2027, release in theatres, followed by an April 02 premiere on Netflix. It will also have preview shows at select IMAX theatres starting February 10, 2027, Wednesday.
