The planned Clueless sequel series, which was set to bring Alicia Silverstone back as Cher Horowitz, is no longer moving ahead at Peacock.

While the streamer has stepped away from the project, sources indicate that CBS Studios and Paramount are still enthusiastic about the property. With the original film’s enduring popularity and loyal fanbase, the series is expected to attract fresh interest when it is reintroduced to potential buyers.

Details about the storyline had largely been kept under wraps, though the show was expected to revisit Cher’s life years after the events of the 1995 film.

The creative team behind the series included Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who were set to write and executive produce under their Fake Empire banner, alongside Jordan Weiss. Silverstone was also attached as both lead and executive producer. Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original film, and producer Robert Lawrence were also on board as executive producers. Universal Television had initially been involved in production alongside CBS Studios but is no longer attached.

This is not Peacock’s first attempt to revisit the Clueless universe. In 2020, the platform explored a separate concept centered on Dionne, Cher’s best friend, though that version also failed to progress beyond development.

Released in 1995, Clueless was loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma and became a defining teen comedy of its time. The film featured a cast that included Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya. It later spawned a television adaptation that aired from 1996 to 1999, with Rachel Blanchard taking over the role of Cher.

Peacock’s current lineup of scripted content includes returning comedies like Twisted Metal, The Paper, and The ‘Burbs, along with dramas such as The Day of the Jackal. Upcoming titles on the platform include M.I.A., The Five-Star Weekend, Superfakes, Dig, and the Friday the 13th prequel Crystal Lake.
