Alicia Silverstone is the latest to join the cast of Yorgos Lanthimos' upcoming sci-fi film Bugonia. She joins the previously announced actors Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
Silverstone, best known for her iconic role as Cher in Clueless, is reuniting with Lanthimos after starring in his 2017 psychological thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Details of Silverstone's role is currently under wraps.
Lanthimos is directing the film from a screenplay by Will Tracy (Succession, The Menu). The plot follows the kidnapping of a big company's CEO by two men, who are obsessed with conspiracy and are certain that the former is an extraterrestrial being hellbent on destroying Earth. It is based on the 2003 South Korean comedy Save the Green Planet!, written and directed by Jang Joon-Hwan.
Bugonia brings Lanthimos and Stone together after The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness. It also reunites Lanthimos with Plemons and the latter with Stone after Kinds of Kindness, which is now running in US theatres. Lanthimos is also producing the film alongside Square Peg's Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster, Element Pictures' Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney, Fruit Tree's Stone, as well as CJ ENM's Jerry Ko and Miky Lee.
Focus Features, which won the US rights to the project out of Cannes, will release the film in theaters on November 7, 2025, with Universal Pictures distributing internationally.
Silverstone recently acted in Netflix's Reptile web series and the dark comedy Krazy House which premiered at Sundance this year. Up next, she has Y2K, which is set to be released in theatres in December. She recently finished filming for Justin Kelly’s The Bird and the Bee. She is also known for her projects Perpetrator, Senior Year, The Lodge, and Valley Girl. She also won a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance in The Baby-Sitters Club series.
