Excitement for Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway's The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been sky-high ever since its first announcement. The makers are at their fag end of their promotional tour as the film is all set for release on May 1. Lucy Liu, who plays a key role in the film has now teased her "mystery" role in the sequel, which arrives 20 years after the original hit theatres.
In a recent interview, Liu shared details about her character that have been kept under wraps, adding that the intrigue is part of what makes the project special. "I think that's what's special about it. I think everyone's looking forward to it," she said.
Apart from Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) and Andrea Sachs (Anne Hathaway), Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), Nigel (Stanley Tucci), Lily (Tracie Thoms) and Irv Ravitz (Tibor Feldman) are all reprising roles for the sequel.
Directed by David Frankel and Aline Brosh McKenna after working together on the original, the newcomers for the sequel, besides Lucy Liu, include Kenneth Branagh, set to play Miranda’s husband, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, BJ Novak, Pauline Chalamet, Rachel Bloom and Patrick Brammal.
Broadway talents Helen J Shen and Conrad Ricamora, along with comedian Caleb Hearon, will also feature in the sequel. Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman reprise their roles as Lily, Andy’s best friend, and the chairman of Runway’s parent company, respectively. Singer-songwriter Lady Gaga is also set to make a key appearance in the film although details of her role remains unknown.
The original The Devil Wears Prada (2006) was based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 eponymous novel. It is considered a cult classic among fans and a mirror to the cutthroat fashion world. The film saw aspiring journalist Andrea Sachs (Hathaway) rediscovering herself after building herself a notable name at Runway magazine headed by the fiercely sharp-tongued Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). The sequel opens at a time when media has undergone vast changes -- notably the decline of the print medium. The tables have turned and Emily is now at a powerful position in the industry and Miranda finds herself in loggerheads with her former assistant as she controls the the advertising budget Miranda urgently requires.
