Frozen 3 plot teases a royal wedding and a first-ever Disney princess twist in theatres

Disney has begun lifting the curtain on Frozen 3, and the newly revealed plot details hint at a milestone the studio hasn’t attempted in over two decades.

At Disney’s Consumer Products Division Launch Conference in Shanghai, China, a translated synopsis revealed that Queen Anna (Kristen Bell) and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) will finally tie the knot in the upcoming film. The same description also teased the arrival of a “mysterious new member” of the royal family, setting off speculation about who—or what—that addition could be.

The synopsis reads, "In this new chapter, witness the wedding of the century in Arendelle as Queen Anna walks down the aisle and joins Elsa on a new magical journey filled with unknown challenges. And what's even more exciting: the royal family is about to welcome a mysterious new member!"

Whether this new character is a baby, another magical creation like Olaf, or even a potential love interest for Elsa (Idina Menzel) remains unclear. But if Anna were to become a mother, Frozen 3 would mark a first for Disney’s princess lineup on the big screen. The only other instance was in the 2000s, in The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, where Ariel’s daughter Melody was introduced—though that sequel was a direct-to-video release, not a theatrical one.

The franchise’s third chapter, arriving in 2027, picks up after the events of Frozen 2. That film concluded with Anna ascending as Queen of Arendelle after accepting Kristoff’s proposal, while Elsa embraced her new role as guardian of the Enchanted Forest. Concept art revealed earlier gave fans a glimpse of the sisters journeying through a forest on horseback, but no further story details had been confirmed until now.

Though Frozen 3 was announced back in 2023 during Disney’s Q1 earnings call, the project has since undergone some creative shifts. Unlike the first two instalments, Jennifer Lee won’t be directing. Instead, Encanto filmmaker Jared Bush has taken the reins. Josh Gad, the voice behind Olaf, also recently confirmed that recording has not yet started and production timelines remain under wraps.

Adding to the excitement, Disney has already revealed that a Frozen 4 is in the works, though no plot details have surfaced for that sequel just yet.
