Netflix has commenced production on the second season of its spy thriller series, Black Doves. The series is headlined by Keira Knightley, who plays an operative for the titular espionage institution.
For season 2, the streamer has added Neve Campbell, Ambika Mod, Babou Ceesay, Sam Riley, Sylvia Hoeks, Goran Kostic and Samuel Barnett to the cast. Reprising their roles from season one are Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire in lead roles, and Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Agnes O’Casey and Molly Chesworth in supporting roles.
Season two is being shot in and around London. The official description for season two reads, “Helen (Knightley) is still betraying her nation’s secrets to the covert organisation she serves: the Black Doves. But after the misadventures of last Christmas, and with her husband, Wallace (Buchan), preparing to become Prime Minister, she is walking a more treacherous line than ever. As Helen’s enigmatic handler, Mrs Reed (Lancashire), is ensnared in a ruthless plot to undermine her position in the Black Doves, Helen is reunited with her best friend, Sam (Whishaw). The once high-end triggerman is now reduced to lonely drinks in Soho bars and low-rate hits. As they search for answers, loyalties are weaponised, trust is shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost everything.”
One Day fame Mod will essay an acerbic and anarchic Black Doves agent sent to assist Helen, called Laila. Ceesay, last seen in Alien: Earth, will be seen as Black Doves executive, Mr Conteh. Patrick, who works for a mysterious outfit and offers Sam a lifeline, will be portrayed by Riley. While the character descriptions for the other actors are undisclosed, the names of their roles have been revealed. Campbell (Scream franchise) plays Cecile Mason, Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049) will be seen as Katia Chernov, Kostic (Ant-Man and the Wasp) will portray Alexi Chernov, while Barnett (Lee) will play Jerry.
Julian Farino and Kieron Hawkes will direct the second season of Black Doves. The series is executive produced by Barton under his Noisy Bear banner, alongside Jane Featherstone and Chris Fry of Sister and Knightley. Callum Devrell-Cameron is the producer. A premiere date for season 2 is yet to be announced.
