Filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro's latest project Frankenstein, starring Jacob Elordi as The Creature, has opened on Netflix and in select theatres to positive reviews from critics and audiences. Interestingly, the film was initially set to star Andrew Garfield as The Creature. According to a report by Daily Express, Garfield had to withdraw from the project because of the scheduling conflicts that emerged following the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Recently, Del Toro spoke about the actor's exit from the project and its impact on his film. Speaking to Sunday Morning, Del Toro said that he saw it as a sign that something good was about to happen. "At this age and this moment in my life, career and craft, I know that when something goes wrong, it is going right," the Pan's Labyrinth filmmaker said.
Del Toro went on to add that Garfield's departure could be viewed "as an accident" and "as something insurmountable," but that he never feared that it would kill the film. "I never doubt the accident," he said. The filmmaker also explained his decisions to cast Elordi for The Creature and Oscar Isaac for the role of Victor Frankenstein. "I look at the eyes. If the eyes do not hold the character, you do not hold the character," the filmmaker explained. "Oscar had brilliance, madness, seduction, and pain," he said. "Jacob was completely open. He had an innocence, an openness and a purity in his eyes that was completely disarming," he explained.
Del Toro cited Elordi's performance as Elvis Presley in 2023's Priscilla as one factor that contributed to him choosing the actor for the role in Frankenstein. "He had a moment of rage (in Priscilla), which The Creature needed, and I went 'Bingo! This is the guy."
