Corey Stoll, known for House of Cards, joins the cast of Apple’s live-action film, Matchbox. The film stars John Cena and Jessica Biel in lead roles and marks the latest collaboration between Skydance and Mattel Films.
The expanding cast of Matchbox also includes Randeep Hooda, Teyonah Parris, Danai Gurira, and Sam Richardson, among others. Details about the characters played by these actors are yet to be disclosed. Directed by Sam Hargrave (Extraction), Matchbox is inspired by Mattel’s iconic die-cast toy vehicle line. David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper pen the screenplay.
The film, the filming for which is currently underway in Budapest, is produced by Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger, alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films and Jules Daly. Matchbox follows a group of childhood friends who must work together to stop an impending worldwide disaster and rediscover their friendship along the way.
The Matchbox story began in 1953 when automotive enthusiast Jack Odell created a toy small enough to fit in a matchbox for his daughter, who could only bring compact toys to school. This simple innovation sparked a global phenomenon, with Matchbox setting high standards of authenticity for toy vehicles. Today, two Matchbox cars are sold every second worldwide, a testament to the brand’s timeless appeal.
Stoll received a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Congressman Peter Russo in House of Cards in 2013. He is also known for his performance as Dr Ephraim Goodweather in the horror drama series The Strain. His other credits include Billions, Law and Order: LA, Ant-Man, and Midnight in Paris. The actor was last seen in Rebel Moon in 2023.
