The other day, Vin Diesel took to social media to pen an emotional note about Michael Caine, his co-star in The Last Witch Hunter (2015) and his long-time friend. Diesel presented Caine with an award for his contributions to cinema at the recent Red Sea International Film Festival. Diesel wrote, "The world saw me hand you a Lifetime Achievement Award this week. Your wife, daughters and grandchildren watching. What they didn’t see was everything else." Then, Diesel went on to talk about the impact that Caine made on his personal life. "When we first met, I was drowning in a fame I never learned to carry. You taught me grace. Resolve. How to stand in my light when I didn’t know how."
The actor then talked about how Caine's friendship with him helped him deal with the death of Paul Walker, his Fast and Furious co-star, at the time they were working on The Last Witch Hunter. In the 2015 film, Diesel played a witch hunter named Kaulder and Caine's character accompanies the former in missions. "Twelve years ago, I lost someone I was not ready to lose… that the world was not ready to lose. You were there… not with words, but with purpose. You allowed for me to play Kaulder. When mortality had its grip on my life, you brought immortality. The Last Witch Hunter wasn’t just a film, It was my resurrection."
Recently, Caine came back from his retirement for a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter. Speaking about it, Diesel wrote, "This summer, three years after retiring, you came back. The words you spoke in character transcended film… like a gift of wisdom." Reportedly, Caine and Diesel's friendship started at a birthday bash, where the former announced the latter as his son. "Once, in a room full of Nolan, Poitier, and Hollywood royalty, you stood and introduced me as your son. Powerful moment," Diesel said. He also referred to the family pictures on Caine's residential wall, saying this signifies the latter's humility. "We’re just two kids from nothing, dreamers who became something. You said I speak to the world, but Michael… you speak to eternity. I love you," Diesel ended his note.
