Director Arun Matheswaran's film DC, starring Lokesh Kanagaraj and Wamiqa Gabbi, has opened in theatres to positive reviews from critics and audiences. The positive word of mouth appears to be having an impact on the film's box office collection so far. On Saturday, the second day of its release, it minted a net collection of 7 crore from theatres in India, according to data from the box office tracker Sacnilk. This takes the overall DC box office collection 11.40 crore in net terms.
It has earned a gross collection of 13.11 crore from theatres in India and 5.25 crore at the box office elsewhere, taking the total collection to 18.36 crore worldwide.
The story follows an outcast, named Devadas (Lokesh Kanagaraj), who fights to keep an innocent family safe after they become police brutality victims. At the same time, he and his compatriots get away from a ruthless police officer, finding justice and redemption and forming unlikely connections during their journey.
The film marks Lokesh's debut in a lead role. Otherwise known for his eponymous cinematic universe, including films such as Kaithi (2019), Vikram (2022) and Leo (2023), the actor has only made cameo appearances before DC. Audiences have largely been appreciative of his performance in the film, with some of them saying that it redeems him after his performance in Kattalan, which failed to make a mark on viewers.
On the other hand, DC brings Wamiqa Gabbi back to Tamil cinema after her role in Thiagarajan Kumararaja's chapter, Ninaivo Oru Paravai, from the 2023 anthology Modern Love Chennai. Since the anthology, Wamiqa has largely focussed on Hindi cinema, with roles in films such as Baby John (2024) and this year's Bhooth Bangla and Pati Patni Aur Woh Do.
