Earlier today, at the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel unveiled their plans for a new Disney+ animated show titled Spiderman: Freshman Year. The show chronicles the early years of Peter Parker, as a high school freshman, before he becomes the friendly, neighbourhood Spiderman that we all know and love.

The series will delve into Spiderman’s backstory from getting bitten by a radioactive spider to Uncle Ben’s death, which eventually propels him to use his powers for good. Fans were naturally excited about the announcement since the MCU movies did not show Spiderman’s origins, but it was later revealed that the animated show has no connections to the grander MCU.

Notable deviations from the MCU are Norman Osborn(Green Goblin) being a mentor/father-figure to Peter Parker as opposed to Tony Stark in the movies. Doctor Otto Octavius will be the primary antagonist of the series. Doctor Strange, the sorcerer supreme, will also join Spiderman in his adventures. 

The first look images from SDCC show us a glimpse of the vibrant, colourful, art style used for the series. The look of the series harkens back to the 60s art style from the Marvel comics. It is worth noting that Spiderman is himself a product of the 60s. The web-slinger made his first appearance in a comic published in 1962.

The show is confirmed to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar in 2024. No official release date has been announced ye
